CUT THROATS NINE Wednesday, February 10th 8pm
In all of the years we've been putting on film screenings, we've never had a chance to present a Western. All of that changes in February when Cinema Overdrive presents "Cut Throats Nine" (a.k.a "Condenados a vivir"), an obscure 1972 Western from Spain that we lovingly refer to as a "Gazpacho western".
The beautiful thing about a series like Cinema Overdrive is that there are no limitations on the types of films we can present, and for those of us who program this series that is very exciting indeed. We strive to bring you the most interesting cross section of rare films that we can, each one as different as possible from the next. However, audacity and chaos are two elements that are usually found in abundance in Cinema Overdrive screenings, and this one is no different.
Director Joaquin Romero Marchent's film is often called "the most violent Western ever made", and when it was released in the United States in the early 1970's patrons were handed "terror masks" in case the film was too gruesome for them to watch. Beautifully shot in the snow covered Pyrenees, this film has all of the elements that fans of Westerns enjoy, and all of the gore and nihilism that you've come to expect and love from Cinema Overdrive screenings.
This is definitely not your grandfather's western, so don't expect to see Roy Rogers burst into song or Tom Mix ride in to save the day. In fact, don't expect ANYONE to save the day in this one! But do expect a killer package of trailers before and after the film, and do expect all of the great entertainment that we enjoy bringing you each and every month at the Colony Theater. Mark your calendars for one of the rarest films we've ever had a chance to show!
